What is TMT bar?
In order to understand what TMT bars are, first we need to know the full form of TMT. Well, TMT stands for Thermo Mechanically Treatment. It is a thermo mechanical manufacturing process of steel bars. This process enhances the endurance levels of the steel bars against corrosion, heat, earthquake and other types of natural disasters. Thus, TMT bars are highly durable, strong and safe and it helps to obtain a longer life to your structure.
Now, how are TMT bars made?
TMT bars are high-strength reinforcement bars with a tough outer core and a soft inner core. The manufacturing process gets done in three steps. They are – Quenching, Self-Tempering and Atmospheric Cooling. The process starts by passing steel wires through a rolling mill stand. Then, these rolled steel wires are again passed through a water cooling system to create super tough TMT bars.
After this process, the TMT bars are cooled. The bars must be cooled in order to equalize the temperature difference between the inner core and outer shell of the TMT bars. Once the TMT bars cool down, they turn into ferrite-pearlite masses. The inner core remains soft giving them great tensile strength and elongation points. This design is unique to the TMT bars and gives superior ductility as well as corrosion resistance. Also, since this manufacturing technique involves no cold stress, it boosts weld-ability.
However, Mega Turbo TMT bars’ process starts in the Induction Furnace (EIF) for manufacturing billets. Sponge Iron is melted in the EIF mixed with requisite quantities of Pig Iron and Ferro Silicon. This molten material gets carried to the continuous casting machine which is then cast to billets of desired lengths.

Types of TMT bars and their uses
There are generally 4 types of TMT bars which fall under different grades. They are-
Fe 415
Fe 500
Fe 550
Fe 600
Let us have a look on these different grades of TMT bars-
Fe 415 TMT bars are used for the small-scale construction projects, such as residential homes, offices and houses. They are cost-effective and ductile which makes them perfect for small load constructions. It can be easily bent into the most complex shapes.
Fe500 grade is generally regarded as a market-standard across various construction projects. They are used across a range of residential, commercial and multi-storey projects. Fe500 offers greater tensile strength and ductility than Fe 415. These bars are specially manufactured to provide stability to high-rise buildings. Variations in Fe500 are Fe 500D and Fe 500S, are also popular choices which offer greater seismic stability and ductility.
Fe 550 grade bars can be used across a range of large-scale projects because of the greater tensile strength. These are used for developing industrial and large-format infrastructure projects like brides, industrial projects and super-structures that requires high load-bearing capacities. Moreover, these bars are impactful in coastal, marine and underground environments as well.
Fe 600 is the strongest TMT grades of the lot used in developing heavy-duty infrastructure projects. They ensure lesser steel congestion within the reinforcement, reduce consumption, and offer greater tensile strength. Fe 600 is extensively used for large-scale projects where the more focus is on load bearing, durability, and corrosion-resistance. They are used in the construction of expressways, metro projects, plants, towers, commercial properties, and industrial zones.
